‘A Walk Through The City’ is a one-day exhibition of black and white street photography. Produced as part of a music and arts event at the Ullet Road Unitarian Church, Liverpool, headlined by singer-songwriter Nick Ellis.
The exhibition chimes with Ellis’ “streetscape narrative noir” approach, and is presented by two prominent Liverpool photographers; John Johnson and Robin Clewley. Johnson and Clewley work independently, each in their own individual and distinct style, but their shared passion for image-making and the contemporary urban landscape has led to a compelling collection.
Both photographers also work extensively in the music industry and have worked closely with Nick Ellis and Mellowtone Records on live and recorded projects.

John Johnson is an acclaimed photographer working extensively in the music industry, touring with and photographing upcoming artists and long-established artists alike.
He is also renowned for his unique vision of the urban environment and produces images with a sculptural quality, simultaneously grand and personal. He brings focus to Liverpool’s cityscape that we may otherwise miss, angles and views we might not take, or those we simply take for granted.
Robin Clewley is an professional documentary and portrait photographer working across the UK, Liverpool is his adopted home. Robin’s distinctive style of portrait photography can be seen on album sleeves and magazine covers alike, while his street photography captures subjects through a noir filter telling everyday stories with a classic filmlic quality, depicting moments of solitude within bustling urban environments.
Nick Ellis is dedicated to the concept of “Song” and “Melody”. Some people call it folk, some just call it good old fashioned song craft. Currently based in Liverpool, Ellis blends streetscape narrative-noir with a classic British acoustic approach. Using a blend of rhythmic attack and finger-quick lucidity, his sound has been described as “a conversation between Elvis Costello and John Martyn.”
