A show by Roxy Topia and Paddy Gould
Got Worms?
Paddy: Picture this, for a year you are standing under the whole blue cloudless sky, expansive flat plains surround you and the brightest sun you have ever seen is beaming down upon you. The nearest big city is 3 hours away and to get anywhere you have to drive, you may or may not see anyone for over a week.
Roxy: Sounds pretty great, well it was.
Paddy: Yeah, and you start to think about where you have been, all mod cons, a distant culture where the internet is always available.
Roxy: Mmm and we begin trying to process it all and to do that we always start drawing.
Paddy: Yeah, we drew a lot together and digitally collaged it all to make designs which we had printed on this real synthetic polyester satin.
Roxy: These sculptures are variations on a motif, but we were thinking about all sorts, from The Inbetweeners to Cleas Oldenburg and his wives, Patty and Coosje. We think a lot about health and wellbeing in an age of social media. It is very dramatic.
Paddy: There’s kind of a compression in making the sculptures. Maybe they’re like phantom drawings of things we miss, bringing closer aspects of things we love.
Roxy: Kinda like “Brick and Clicks” in retail; an offline and online presence.
Paddy: How d’you know about “Brick and Clicks”?
Roxy: Google innit.
Roxy and Paddy have been celebrating, sorry *collaborating since 2008 and have just completed a year long residency in Roswell, New Mexico, USA. Got Worms? is their first solo show together in Liverpool. They are wonderful people. www.roxytopiapaddygould.com
