Charles Shannon and Charles Ricketts
18 May – 30 September 2021
Walker Art Gallery

A new display at the Walker Art Gallery spotlights the work and relationship of Charles Shannon (1863-1937) and Charles Ricketts (1866-1931). Four artworks – one painting, two delicate drawings and one lithograph – explore some of the people, ideas and themes that influenced their work.

Shannon and Rickett met at art school as teenagers. They lived and worked together for more than fifty years. Although they never identified themselves as a homosexual couple, they were undoubtedly deeply committed to each other and created work which suggests their rejection of the confines of Victorian society.

From complex female characters to a study for a Biblical tale of morality and judgment, the select display reflects not only on their creative partnership but also the artistic and forward-thinking circles the artists moved in.
