THE ALCHEMY BETWEEN US
Sunday 11 – Saturday 17 December 2016
10.00–17.00
Why do people need artworks? Artist Laurence Payot presents a week-long series of videos, texts and workshops acting as catalysts for discussion and exchange. Questioning the value of art and how it helps to make sense of the world, The Alchemy Between Us aims to explore the communicative potential of art. Laurence Payot works with communities to create collective events and objects that respond to and engage with specific places. Participants are given tools to connect with other people and experience their everyday lives from an out-of-the ordinary perspective.
Visitors are invited to the following events:
THE ALCHEMY BETWEEN US: ART AND AUDIENCE
Tuesday 13 December 2016
12.30–13.30
FREE
Join a discussion led by Laurence Payot, Dr Yiota Vassilopoulou from University of Liverpool and Laura Robertson from online arts magazine The Double Negative, about the value of viewership and participation in contemporary art. Artists working across a range of methods and mediums will be invited to discuss ways in which viewers or participants are integral to their practice, or indeed necessary to the completion of works. With a focus on practice, the discussion is aimed at artists wanting to share their skills for initiating collaboration and involvement. Acknowledging that art can be socially-engaged without the need for participation, studio-based artists will be asked to reflect on their relationships with audiences, and the importance of reception to their approaches to making.
This talk is programmed by Laurence Payot in association with The Royal Standard, a Tate Exchange Liverpool Associate.
THE ALCHEMY BETWEEN US: ART AS SYMBIOSIS
Wednesday 14 December 2016
12.30–13.30
FREE
Visitors are invited to join artist Laurence Payot and scientists Pr. Michael Brockhurst and Ewan Minter for an open discussion about the parallels between art and microbiology. The conversation will begin by looking at symbiosis, the term used to describe two organisms coming together to form one. Find out more about artistic and scientific perspectives whilst experimenting with interactive artwork.
This workshop is programmed by Laurence Payot in association with The Royal Standard, a Tate Exchange Liverpool Associate.
THE ALCHEMY BETWEEN US: INTERACTING WITH ARTWORKS
Thursday 15 December 2016
12.30–13.30
FREE
Explore the magical and intangible mysteries between you and artists. Led by artist Laurence Payot and art historian Dr Lara Eggleton, this discussion will open up the realms between art, alchemy and magic.
