Painting with a Limited Palette (Acrylics)
Thursday 22 February, 10.30am to 12.30pm
£15 per person. Places are limited
The present-day art shop has a huge range of colours available and it is very tempting to buy all of them. Yet some artists have gone the opposite way and painted using a minimal range of colours – usually called a limited or restricted palette.
There are some advantages to using a limited palette
1. You get to ‘know’ your colours very quickly and will find you can mix a surprisingly wide range of hues and be able to repeat them
2. All your colours will have been mixed from the same basic range and will sit together nicely on the canvas. This gives the painting a unified look
For this workshop you will need: acrylic paints:
• Titanium white
• Yellow Ochre
• Cadmium Red medium
• Raw Umber
• Ultramarine Blue
Small and medium size brushes, water container, palette knife and a flat surface for mixing paints.
You might wish to use a ‘stay-wet’ palette. These can be purchased but can be easily made on the day with a plastic tray (empty Ferrero Rocher boxes are ideal) a J-Cloth and a piece of strong paper – Paul will show you how on the day.
Paul will look at some examples of paintings completed with a limited palette, especially the work of Anders Zorn, and demonstrate the limited palette in use.
