Williamson Art Gallery: Cammell Laird 1993 -1996, Tom Wood
Continued and rehung
Photographs by Tom Wood: Cammell Laird Shipyard 1993 – 1996: Photographs from the Documentary Photography Archive at the Williamson Art Gallery from the 7th of July until the 2nd of Sept, continued and re-hung from 8th September until the 14th October.
Tom Wood’s photographs of Cammell Laird Shipyard in Birkenhead taken between 1993 and 1996, were originally commissioned by the Documentary Photography Archive (DPA) to capture a definitive phase in the social and political history of the region.
This is the first time that these photographs of the Cammell Laird Shipyard have been shown in their home town. The images will be accompanied by archive material relating to the history of the shipyard drawn from the Williamson’s own collection and Wirral Archives.
Wood was commissioned by the DPA to photograph the working lives of the men who built the ships as they were fighting to save the yard, and the shipyard prior to its closure after 170 years in Birkenhead. When the business re-opened as a repair yard, Wood was able to gain further access to photograph the next phase of the industry’s life. The images in the exhibition are due to be published by Steidl in a three volume publication, edited by our fellow exhibitor -photographer, Cian Quayle later this year and the Williamson hopes to host a book launch.
Tom Wood, known to many locals as the ‘Photie Man’, was featured in the BBC documentary series What do artists do all day? and has had solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the USA, including a retrospective exhibition in Moscow. His recent exhibition The Pier Head at Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery proved to be their most popular for years. He is currently exhibiting at the Albert Dock in Liverpool in the ‘Art of Football’ with fellow photographers Ken Grant and Tabitha Jussa. He will also be part of Northern Narratives ‘New Brighton Revisited’ exhibition at Marine Point with photographers – Martin Parr and Ken Grant.
Cian Quayle and Tom Wood have worked together previously on Tom’s DPA exhibitions at Chester University in 2013. Our two summer photographic exhibitions at the Williamson Art Gallery and the forthcoming publication extend the work of Quayle and Wood in their ongoing collaboration.
Many thanks to Spectrum Photographic for their assistance with mounting this exhibition.
