SUMMARY:Williamson Art Gallery & Museum: IB18: Williamson Art Gallery: Camm
 ell Laird 1993 -1996 (continued and re-hung)
DESCRIPTION:Williamson Art Gallery: Cammell Laird 1993 -1996\, Tom Wood\n\n
Continued and rehung\n\nPhotographs by Tom Wood: Cammell Laird Shipyard 19
93 – 1996: Photographs from the Documentary Photography Archive at the W
illiamson Art Gallery from the 7th of July until the 2nd of Sept\, continu
 ed and re-hung from 8th September until the 14th October.\n\nTom Wood’s
photographs of Cammell Laird Shipyard in Birkenhead taken between 1993 and
1996\, were originally commissioned by the Documentary Photography Archiv
e (DPA) to capture a definitive phase in the social and political history
of the region.\n\nThis is the first time that these photographs of the Cam
mell Laird Shipyard have been shown in their home town. The images will be
accompanied by archive material relating to the history of the shipyard d
rawn from the Williamson’s own collection and  Wirral Archives.\n\nWood
was commissioned by the DPA to photograph the working lives of the men wh
o built the ships as they were fighting to save the yard\, and the shipyar
d prior to its closure after 170 years in Birkenhead. When the business re
-opened as a repair yard\, Wood was able to gain further access to photogr
aph the next phase of the industry’s life.  The images in the exhibitio
n are due to be published by Steidl in a three volume publication\, edited
by our fellow exhibitor -photographer\, Cian Quayle later this year and t
he Williamson hopes to host a book launch.\n\nTom Wood\, known to many loc
als as the ‘Photie Man’\, was featured in the BBC documentary series W
hat do artists do all day? and has had solo exhibitions throughout Europe
and the USA\, including a retrospective exhibition in Moscow. His recent e
xhibition The Pier Head at Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery proved to be the
ir most popular for years. He is currently exhibiting at the Albert Dock i
n Liverpool in the ‘Art of Football’ with fellow photographers Ken Gra
nt and Tabitha Jussa. He will also be part of Northern Narratives ‘New B
righton Revisited’ exhibition at Marine Point with photographers – Mar
tin Parr and Ken Grant.\n\nCian Quayle and Tom Wood have worked together p
reviously on Tom’s DPA exhibitions at Chester University in 2013. Our tw
o summer photographic exhibitions at the Williamson Art Gallery and the fo
rthcoming publication extend the work of Quayle and Wood in their ongoing
collaboration.\n\nMany thanks to Spectrum Photographic for their assistanc
 e with mounting this exhibition.
