Full details of the series

This Session: ‘This Must Be The Place: Liverpool’s Popular Music Venues’

From music halls and Vaudeville in the 1800s, via the seminal clubs and theatres of the 20th century, to the large-scale multi-million-dollar arena concerts of today, the use of private and public space for music performance has impacted on cities, urban identity and cultural legacy around the world. In this lecture Professor Kronenburg, Roscoe Professor of Architecture, will focus on the music venues of Liverpool and describe the special history it has had in shaping his understanding of this architecture, examining both famous and less well-known examples from the smallest underground music space to the largest stadium-filling travelling set.

Following the lecture Robert Kronenburg will be signing copies of This Must Be The Place: An Architectural History of Popular Music Performance Venues (Bloomsbury, 2019) in the Waterhouse Cafe, Victoria Gallery & Museum.

You can also hear Professor Kronenburg discussing this topic on Spencer Leigh’s BBC Radio Merseyside programme On The Beat on 10th March at 8.00pm (available on iplayer afterwards).
