The WMC Fine Art Fellowship provides graduating students with the opportunity to continue and develop their practice for a further year. The Fellows offer their support and recent experience to several areas of curriculum delivery. This may be in the form of contributions to option modules or studio seminars and more informal mentoring of undergraduate students. They are seen as an additional presence in the studio and operate between staff and students providing advice and guidance to current students at all levels.
The fellowship emerged in an informal way during the late 1990’s. Each year would see a very different type of practice being deployed by that particular fellow. As the millennium approached the Fine Art Team at Wirral Met decided to create a more formal recognition of the fellowship role. A ‘job description’ was devised and a number of fellowships were identified within specific areas of practice, Printing, Sculpture and Painting. In this way the fellowship students have had a long and significant impact on the studio experience of undergraduates. The exhibition seeks to track their individual journeys from the fellowship year to their current practice.
