Without These walls
The Housing Market Renewal pathfinder programme ran from 2002-2011. It’s purpose was to “renew failing housing markets and reconnect them to regional markets”, “improve neighbourhoods” and “encourage people to live and work in these areas.”
The second Heseltine Institute for Public Policy and Practice seminar will centre around the screening of a short film by Jayne Lawless and Janet Brandon about the experience of compulsory purchase and demolition of homes in a ‘pathfinder’ neighbourhood.
The film shows the negative impact that ‘well-intentioned’ top down policies can have on communities and supports claims that the HMR initiative has resulted only in unnecessary demolition, loss of built heritage and poor quality renovation.
Audience discussion of the film and its implications with Jayne Lawless and Ronnie Hughes will follow.
