Liverpool poets take spoken word to St. James Gardens

Eclectic spoken word night A Lovely Word is relocating outdoors for a one off special event at the wooden henge at St James Gardens Thursday 6 August, 7.30pm.

Supported by Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, the monthly spoken word night A Lovely Word has teamed up with the Unusual Art Sourcing Company to bring their usual poetry open mic to an unusual setting.

The night which usually takes place in the Everyman bistro, will see poets and performers venturing out into St James Gardens for a socially-distanced version of the regular event.

Featured poets alongside a selection of open mic-ers will perform live in St James Garden, below the Anglican Cathedral with audiences invited to watch out in the open air or via a live stream on Youtube.

The open-air event is free to attend, and seating is ‘bring your own blankets’ with facemasks required and seating plots for social distancing.

A Lovely Word combines curated performers and open mic-ers, which offers a warm and inclusive atmosphere to nurture local talent and give poets the opportunity to perform.

The Unusual Art Sourcing Company, a Liverpool based performance art project who brought the World’s Smallest Festival Stage to last year’s Liverpool Sound City, will be providing the platform that will bring poets to the stage in St James Gardens.

Following funding from Arts Council England, A Lovely Word has provided workshops championing artist development and focussing on improving performance skills for poets and spoken word artists. Workshop participants explore new ways of working with dedicated workshops that cover things like microphone technique, confidence building and finding your voice.

Alex Ferguson, producer and host of A Lovely Word, said: “Getting into poetry can be really transformative for people’s sense of self. It’s really positive to see people getting involved with the workshops we’ve had so far and I’d encourage anyone who is interested to give it a go.”
