“Come to see what happens when academics and artists get together to THINK OUT LOUD. This event will use a unique seminar and workshop format.”

Thinking Out Loud is a new public seminar series born out of a unique collaboration between Liverpool John Moores University, Convenience Gallery and Dark Side Art Lab and other Merseyside based culture venues.

David Tyrer.

This paper explores the public life of the idea of phobia in France from the turn of the twentieth century to the 1930s, using a case of an everyday encounter with phobic fear experienced by an ordinary man to examine the diversity of uses to which the idea of phobia has been put. The paper is haunted by a peculiar paradox which lies at the very heart of the modern idea of phobia: that the radical openness by which seemingly any object can manifest as an object of fear has in fact provided cultural and aesthetic resources which ironise medical power and indeed fear itself.
