SUMMARY:Make North Docks: Make.North Docks: Thinking Out Loud: David Tyrer
 'Fear'
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nLJMU Dr\, David Tyrer leads a free lecture session on F
ear.\nBOOK HERE\n"Come to see what happens when academics and artists get
together to THINK OUT LOUD. This event will use a unique seminar and works
hop format."\n\nThinking Out Loud is a new public seminar series born out
of a unique collaboration between Liverpool John Moores University\, Conve
nience Gallery and Dark Side Art Lab and other Merseyside based culture ve
nues.\n\nDavid Tyrer.\n\nThis paper explores the public life of the idea o
f phobia in France from the turn of the twentieth century to the 1930s\, u
sing a case of an everyday encounter with phobic fear experienced by an or
dinary man to examine the diversity of uses to which the idea of phobia ha
s been put. The paper is haunted by a peculiar paradox which lies at the v
ery heart of the modern idea of phobia: that the radical openness by which
seemingly any object can manifest as an object of fear has in fact provid
ed cultural and aesthetic resources which ironise medical power and indeed
  fear itself.\n\n\n\n\n
