An evening of poetry & reflection from writer, broadcaster and teacher Seán Street

Seán Street has 15 poetry publications. He will be reading poems from his recent collections with Shoestring Press, Journey into Space, and Running Out of Time.

Christopher Somerville, writing in The Times, summed up his poetry thus: “Street unearths loss, memory and redemption from English terrain like few other poets.”

Prose includes works on Gerard Manley Hopkins and the Dymock Poets, as well as several studies of sound poetics, the latest of which, Wild Track: Sound, Text and the Idea of Birdsong was published by Bloomsbury in a new paperback edition in May 2025. The book was a finalist in the Environmental Science Prose Awards, 2024.

Previous prose on sound includes The Poetry of Radio (2013), The Memory of Sound (2015) and The Sound of a Room (2020) published by Routledge. He has also written a trilogy of books on sound aesthetics for Palgrave (2017-19).

He has worked in radio for more than 50 years and is emeritus professor at Bournemouth University.

Of his poetry George Szirtes has written:

‘Seán Street is a poet who well understands both the power and the ephemerality of the spoken word, and how “while it would be always unforgettable / it would be forever unrecoverable”. That is the narrow ledge of perception that not just we humans, but the natural world itself is perched on. His recent work condenses a lifetime of celebratory and acute listening. It is that which gives his quiet yet clear voice its bindingly melancholy yet joyful power.’
