Fringe Flicks: Surreal Short Films feat. Hotel Kalura
Friday 10 October 2025, 7.30pm (films from 7.50pm)
DoES Liverpool, The Tapestry, Kempston Street, Liverpool L3 8HL

Fringe Flicks returns this October with an international programme of surreal, absurd, and experimental cinema.

The featured short for this edition is Hotel Kalura by award-winning UK animator Sophie Koko Gate, whose acclaimed work has screened at Sundance, SXSW and Tate Modern, and who was shortlisted for the 2023 Film London Jarman Award. Set on the romantic island of Sicily, Hotel Kalura is a dazzling animated tale that blends humour and dreamlike strangeness in Koko Gate’s distinctive style.

Also screening is Les Bêtes by Michael Granberry, an award-winning animation director whose credits include Severance, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, and Adventure Time. His lavish stop-motion fantasy, made entirely from recycled puppets, draws on the traditions of 1930s animation while pushing into darker territory.

The wider lineup brings together twelve shorts from across the UK, US, Iran, Spain, France, Sweden, Estonia and Ireland. Highlights include Paris James’ Liverpool-made The Rime, a tense drama set by the Mersey; Rasmus Lindkvist’s Hello Again and Lost in Galactic Translation from Sweden; and Jim and Joseph Dethick’s Hand Painted Wooden Reptiles, a Lynchian detective tale. Audiences will also encounter Alone by Negah Sohrabi & Abofazel Amir (Iran), Call of Nature by Donal O’Dea (Ireland), Keijo on the Go by Katrina Oll & Alex Toodu (Estonia), Must Ash by John Akre (USA), No Trespassing in Transylvania by Michael, Maxwell & Emmett Dorfman (USA), Stopclock by Maxwell Hicks (UK), The Ultimate Weapon by Romain Revert (France), To Dinner by Robert Rabanal (Spain), and Typing… by Pablo Olewski Díaz (Spain).

From monster comedies and poetic hauntings to DIY horror and satirical animations, the programme promises to surprise, provoke, and entertain.

Fringe Flicks takes place at DoES Liverpool, a community-driven makerspace in The Tapestry, and is presented on a Pay What You Can basis. Refreshments will be available, and audiences are invited to stay on after the screenings to socialise and continue the conversation.

Presented by People Versus TV CIC, a Liverpool-based collective dedicated to experimental film, community cinema, and artist-led collaboration, Fringe Flicks offers an inclusive, welcoming space to discover new voices and share in the energy of independent cinema.
