Kirkby Gallery: An Introduction to Digital Photography with Steve Samosa

Join local professional photographer Steve Samosa on a free beginners level course designed to build your confidence with digital photography. Using either your camera or smart phone, you will be guided through the process of understanding and maximising the use of your own equipment. With lots of opportunities to practice your skills both indoors and outdoors, you will learn how to take better photographs and how to use your camera’s features and settings to enhance them.
The course will run on Thursdays 1 – 4pm on the following dates:
18 September, 25 September, 2 October, 9 October, 16 October,
23 October, 30 October, 6 November
The course will cover:
• An introduction to camera settings – Here we show you the different auto and manual modes found on your camera and why you will never use auto again! A task will be set allowing you to take your first steps to going fully manual.
• How to compose photographs and understand common photography jargon.
• Shutter speed – you’ll be taught how to control movement in your photos via the shutter speed.
• Focusing – Getting your pictures pin sharp!
• Aperture & Depth of Field.
• The importance of understanding light.
• The Exposure Triangle, Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO make up the three sides of the exposure triangle. They work together to produce a photo that is properly exposed.
• Camera equipment – A look at different types of camera gear, which ones are best to use for learning and what are the essential pieces of equipment you will need.
• Post-production and Raw Files – Here you will be introduced into your next stage of photographic excellence – The post-production of images!

Please note you must use your own photographic equipment
It is recommended that you attend all of the sessions as each consecutive workshop builds on the last.
The sessions are suitable for every level of experience, but please note, as well as bringing your own photographic equipment, you must be prepared to go out on location.

A digital SLR/Mirrorless camera or Bridge camera with MASP functions
Memory card for the camera
Tripod (optional)
Remote shutter release (optional)
