One Flew East
CBS presents ‘One Flew East’ an exhibition bringing together the work of artist’s Jenny West & Louise Giovanelli.
An engagement with art history is central to the practices of Giovanelli and West. Travelling as a means to access and collect images provides starting points for both artists to reconfigure and reimagine details found within the rich history of western visual culture.
There is a process of translation and dislocation found within their work – cuts, extracts and reversals are mechanisms used to accentuate and simplify imagery. Both artists emphasise the material and sculptural properties of appropriated and referenced material.
The echoing motifs and patterns – borrowed and spliced together fromother sources, creates a dialogue between the works in the show, linking them not just to each other but to the history of art. There is a tangible desire by the artists to connect their practices to art of the past, brokering old and new ways of thinking and looking at art objects, materiality and representation.
