——————————

Felt-making is an ancient process of making fabric from wool fibre without spinning or weaving. The aim of this course will be to introduce students to the wonderful world of felt making and to a selection of techniques and applications.

You will learn the ancient Scandinavian skill of wet felt-making. A magically creative process, merino wool and mulberry silk fibres are arranged carefully into a design before water and olive soap are applied to the surface. Friction from your hands alone with transform the fibres into a textile which has a uniquely organic look and feel.

Catherine will show you basic hand embroidery to decorate your artwork before helping you assemble to a frame (embellishment can be stuck down for anyone not so keen on stitch).

The second project will be 3D felt as Catherine guides you through the process of making a festive decoration. Beautiful as a gift – you can choose to add a hair pin clip, a brooch back or hang from a Christmas tree or wreath. A ‘how to’ notes handout is included along with references for suppliers and resources.

The course is designed to encourage student confidence and knowledge of the felt-making process whilst enjoying making a variety of items. You will be closely supported throughout and the techniques explored in this course require no specialist skills – the only restriction being the limit of the student’s own imagination!
