Tuesdays 6.45pm-9pm starting 7th February 2017 (£160 for 10 sessions)
This painting course will be open to all abilities from complete beginners who haven’t done art since school, to those who use art as a hobby, as well as artists wanting help developing their own work and practise.
Over the course of 10 weeks, you will develop your awareness of painting as a unique means of visual communication. Through practical work you will consolidate your knowledge of visual grammar and expand your visual literacy. You will consider how ideas, information and feelings can be articulated, transformed and conveyed through visual systems, processes and conventions. As well as having the opportunity to reflect on historical precedents and draw upon your own experiences, you will be encouraged to explore your own aesthetic abilities and visual judgements which will form a fundamental part of your practise.
During the course you will be asked to explore and develop ideas relating to your own “Personal Environment”. This will involve the processes of research, development of ideas and the design and production of work relating to the brief.
You should focus on making work that relates to your own experience of being in the world. This may relate to home or work life, landscape or nature as you see it, remember or imagine it. It could also relate to hobbies or interests, film, media, politics, religion, sport etc etc and can incorporate any number of differing experiences that make reference to who you are.
As artists we have a whole array of interests and ideas but how do we make art with all this stuff?
This course will give you the opportunity to use your imagination and develop those inventive processes alongside traditional and contemporary techniques. You will make art as an artist does and develop your project from its conceptual beginning to its physical end. The course will help you develop a deeper understanding of art and how as practitioners we think and realise work.
This course provides skill based learning in order to deepen the understanding and applications of the visual language that surrounds us. During the 10 weeks you will build up to the creation of your own finished painting in acrylics as follows:
Week 1: The importance of drawing (gradation study).
Week 2: Colour theory.
Week 3: Underpainting (grisaille study).
Week 4: Chroma (still life study).
Week 5: Invention and composition.
Weeks 6-10: Individual project.
