I Dream of Gottfried is a series of ten ceramic sculptures exploring the dreams of Kaspar Hauser. The mysterious Kaspar Hauser was a teenage foundling who appeared, seemingly from nowhere, in Nuremberg in 1828. Speaking only one sentence in an unfamiliar dialect, unable to walk properly and eventually murdered, rumours abound about his true origin. The enduring appeal of Hauser’s story is that the truth is unknowable, even to Kaspar himself.

Hauser’s dreams were recorded by one of his guardians, Georg Friedrich Daumer, and the title references a dream in which Hauser questions the origin of his own name. The audience is invited to make a precarious journey in Hauser’s shoes, a journey into his dreams where the truth is as blurred, distorted and chaotic as his waking life. We find that the conscious/unconscious, hidden/seen, lost/found are all two sides of the same coin.

This traditional science fiction story, an age-old idea of the outsider unfamiliar with the society they find themselves in, is heightened and made relevant to us all through the exploration of his dreams. The sculptures are symbolic interpretations of this dream life; an attempt to channel our experience of the unconscious that defies language.
