Rebecca Gouldson Toolkit installation

supported by Granada Foundation & Cass Art

For the month of July, our window will be brought to life with a unique installation by Rebecca Gouldson. This is very generously supported by Granada Foundation and local art supplies retailer, Cass Art.

Local printmaker Karen Edwards will lead a monoprint workshop inspired by Rebecca’s installation on Sunday 15th July at Cass Art’s School Lane store, click here for further details.

TOOLKIT

Tools for looking and other curious objects

A window is a tool; it allows us to look out, creating a frame around our view and it allows us to look in, providing a glimpse of what’s inside. In a similar way, Artists and Makers use view-finders of all shapes and sizes as frames. These frames act as tools for ‘looking’ as part of their creative process; to gather inspiration and to find and select parts of the world that interest them.

The idea for this window installation was initially inspired by a mirror made from metal in Bristol Museum’s Egyptian collection, its once reflective surface was encrusted with thousands of years of patina. A mirror is a view-finder because it frames a part of the world that it reflects. The collection of objects in this window installation grew as I explored the idea of view-finders as creative tools.

These objects hang waiting to be used, to have their functions tested and explored, infused with a sense of potential activity. At the same time, their aged and patina covered surfaces suggest a story of a past life, allowing us to imagine their former use.
