The University of Liverpool’s Department of Music has established a 10-day music festival that showcases local and guest artists from the world of contemporary music.
Open Circuit, will be headlined by Ensemble 10/10, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s award-winning contemporary music group led by internationally renowned conductor Clark Rundell. The concert features recent compositions by University of Liverpool composers, Ben Hackbarth and Matthew Fairclough, for instruments and electronic sound.
The evening will also include a multimedia event, featuring acclaimed cellist Oliver Coates playing music for cello, electronic sound and projected video.
Other artists who will take part in the festival include the Elysian String Quartet, Markus Poppand Bristol-based electronic producer, Vessel, who will play alongside Immix Ensemble, one of the UK’s most exciting new music groups
Immix Ensemble focus on collaborations with innovative musical voices from across Liverpool and the North West. In addition, the festival also features a concert of ‘acousmatic’ electronic music, a workshop of young composers’ music with Ensemble 10/10 and a screening of audio-visual works by various artists from Liverpool and beyond.

Saturday October 18
7pm Renowned cellist Oliver Coates performs a concert of new music for cello, electronics and video including works by Laurence Crane, Olivier Messiaen, Mica Levi, Iannis Xenakis and a world premiere by Matthew Fairclough.
8.15pm Ensemble 10/10 performs music for ensemble and electronics by Ben Hackbarth, Matthew Fairclough, Michel van der Aa and Edgard Varèse.
Monday October 20
10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm Ensemble 10/10 holds a workshop of music by young and upcoming composers.
Tuesday October 21
6pm Markus Popp discusses his work in pioneering “glitch”, “clicks & cuts” and “minimal” music. The characteristic tension of strict formalism and subtle, organic melodies has made his haunting “music 2.0” unmistakable from the beginning.
7:30pm Concert with Markus Popp (Oval) titled Full Circle.
Wednesday October 22
1pm Renowned percussionist Joby Burgess plays music by University of Liverpool Staff including works by Max de Wardener, John Lely, Gabriel Prokofiev, Iannis Xenakis and a world premiere for percussion and electronics by Oliver Carman.
8pm Vessel (Triangle Records) and Immix Ensemble. A newly commissioned collaborative work for acoustic and electronic instruments. plus Hive Collective: Engineering Joy 3.0. Presented by Syndrome in association with Liverpool Music Week.
Thursday October 23
7pm Screening of acclaimed Audio/Visual installations from this year’s Music and Screen Media Conference.
8pm Performance of Nono’s La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura for violin, electronics and latop ensemble.
Friday October 24
6pm A Concert of acousmatic works featuring Adam Stansbie, Nicola Monopoli, Sam Salem, Adam Stansbie, Daniel Swilley, Oliver Carman and Adrian Moore. view programme
