Giraffe: a visual exploration of laughing by the Fab Collective 18 September – 28 November 2010
In these gloomy times the Fab Collective want to make you smile – or maybe even laugh – with their latest exhibition at St Luke’s Church. Always up for a laugh, the Collective want to touch people’s funny bone in their new exhibition. Titled Giraffe, the exhibition – which is part of the Independent strand of the Liverpool Biennial – will show the funny side of Liverpool.
Jan Rogerson explains why Liverpool is such a witty city:
“What makes Liverpool what it is? For me, it has always been Scousers’ ability to laugh in the face of adversity. Of course Liverpudlians are famous for their wit and humour too.”
The Fab Collective is a diverse group of Liverpool photographers who share a passion for capturing the city of Liverpool and its residents in their pictures.
The exhibition follows an incredibly successful year for the Collective. An undisputed highlight was being involved with Urban Strawberry Lunch’s Hollywood Homeless project, in which members mentored people from the homeless community. Also, with the help of some disposable cameras, the group spent a day exploring whether it is the photographer or camera that the makes the image. Most recently they displayed their second exhibition ‘Having a Do’ at St Luke’s throughout August. In case you’re wondering where the name Fab Collective came from, Peter Goodbody explains:
“We think big. If an ice cream-inspired name is good enough for Magnum Photography, then who are we to buck the trend?”
The future is Fab. Collectively so.
