Liverpool Cathedral – Names Instead of Numbers

Names-not--numbers-100‘Names instead of Numbers’ & ‘Portraits for Posterity’
In the Well of the Cathedral (video show also in main entrance turret 12-14.00)
24 January – 4 February 2011
(09:00 – 17:30 (each day))
An exhibition to mark the National Holocaust Memorial Day presented by the Merseyside Council of Christians and Jews.

‘Names instead of Numbers’ tells the stories of 27 men who were interned in Dachau Concentration Camp. These men came from all walks of life and from everywhere from France to Russia. Some were political prisoners, others gypsies, Christians or Jews.

Their stories were researched by students, as well as interested adults and relatives of prisoners who were eager to remember the fates of these men as well as learning more about national Socialism. The project is sponsored by Teachers in Bavaria at the Dachauer Forum

‘Portraits for Posterity’ by Matt Whittle is a national collection of photographic portraits of women and men who survived the Nazi Holocaust in Europe. Each portrait is accompanied by a brief biography based upon the sitter’s own words. This January exhibition includes 10% of the national collection.

This exhibition received start-up funding from the Rausing family and since 2009 by generous support from the Pears Foundation.

Linking with the main exhibition will be a video show taking place in the turret room by the main entrance to the Cathedral, between the hours of 12:00 and 14:00 each day illustrating further examples of the work.

(PLEASE NOTE – UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO ITS UNUSUAL LOCATION, THERE IS NO DISABLED ACCESS TO THE VIDEO SHOW, ACCESS CAN ONLY BE GAINED VIA A NARROW STAIRCASE)
