Immaculately installed in a vacant shop in Liverpool’s Chinatown is local sculptor Adrian Jeans’ Nice Heads: six heads modelled in his distinctive signature style that ask the still unresolved question “what is a portrait?” Is it a reflection of character, either of the subject as expressed by facial expression or of the artist as expressed by working style? Or is it just an object resulting from the materials and processes with which it is made?
Nice Heads is rooted in Liverpool: the heads portray local people and Jeans has combined a sometimes surprisingly friendly Scouse greeting with newspaper language protocol to riff on portraits as potentially both character portrayals and inanimate art objects.
Jeans is also exhibiting The Craft of Art at Metquarter, 35 Whitechapel, L1 6DA. 3 July – 31 August, 2014.
