Real life stories from UK servicemen about their experiences of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder will be explored in a ground-breaking production by an Edge Hill University senior lecturer and PHD student.
They Shoot Dogs, which premieres at the University’s Arts Centre in October, explores the wider effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on servicemen, their loved ones, and society as a whole and will feature real life stories and some verbatim dialogue from British soldiers. The production explores the traumatic landscape of conflict through the fictionalised memories of the men who survived it.
The play’s cast will include Edge Hill drama alumni in addition to professional actors, and five performing arts students graduating from the University this summer will have roles on the production team.
PHD student and professional playwright Sandra Philip wrote the play after her own personal experience of PTSD led to her academic research into the condition, as part of which she interviewed many servicemen.
Sandra said “I hope the production will aid understanding of the potentially erratic behaviour of PTSD sufferers and help us all in our attempts to understand this multifaceted illness.”
