Summer Season at Liverpool Philharmonic

Lots of familiar names old and new on the list of concerts coming up this summer at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

SUMMER MADNESS AT THE PHIL!
Jam-packed new season of events now on sale

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is all set for Summer, with a huge range of new events to suit every taste now on sale.

Marianne FaithfullFemale songstresses are out in force at the Phil this season, with appearances from 60s icon Marianne Faithfull, the Grammy award-winning singer Rita Coolidge, ‘folkabilly’ singer/songwriter Nanci Griffith and Suzanne Vega with her politically influenced acoustic pop. June sees a performance from the ground-breaking Indian singer Anoushka Shankar, with an ensemble of virtuoso Eastern and Western musicians.

Male solo singers are also well-represented, with a late April gig from Super Furry Animals’ frontman Gruff Rhys, a visit in May from rock/blues stalwart Gary Moore and a revival of the Funk Brothers’ glorious Motown R&B sound from the band’s Jack Ashford. Jason Donovan, after his gruelling adventures on TV’s I’m a Celebrity – Get Me Out of Here!, is ready for musical success once more and arrives at the Phil in May.

John MartynInternational flavour is provided by Grammy award winning Latin band Los Lobos, the iconic Allen Toussaint bringing the sound of New Orleans and Tinariwen, a band formed on a Libyan refugee camp in the early 1980s; perform their gutsy rebel songs in a bluesy guitar style. We are also proud to announce a residency from renowned Lebanese oud virtuoso and composer Marcel Khalife, as the flagship event of Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival 2007. Marcel Khalife has performed with many of the world’s greatest orchestras, and this rare UK visit will include a concert with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Folk/roots singers at the Phil this season include cult figure Loudon Wainwright III, a favourite on the live circuit, and Scottish folk legend John Martyn, performing his seminal album, Solid Air, live.

More folk gigs feature in the third season of the popular After Eight series in the intimate setting Hall’s Rodewald Suite, from Ireland’s Frankie Gavin and Sweden’s Tobias Froberg & Lizzie Nunnery. The After 8 programme also features jazz from Zoe Rahman and Pierre Bensusan, and a two night stand from Liverpool’s own Ian McNabb. As part of the Writing on the Wall Festival, an evening dedicated to John Coltrane (featuring Gilad Atzmon and the Orient House Ensemble) completes the After Eight programme. The informal atmosphere, small capacity and in-house bar open throughout the performances combined with quality artists make the After Eight gigs a great night out.

An extravaganza of rhythm and rhyme from Liverpool’s former ‘poet in residence’ Benjamin Zephaniah and friends and an evening of poetry and song with Grace Nichols, Clare Shaw & Soul Purpose feature as part of the Writing on the Wall Festival.

Nostalgia for decades gone by comes in the form of Thriller Live – In Concert – a musical celebration of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, an amazing show featuring over 40 performers. Rumours of Fleetwood Mac promise the ultimate celebration concert of one of rock’s first supergroups, and The Hollies, one of the original classic bands of the 60s and one of the few to retain their status, also bring their hit-filled show to the Phil.

Vasily PetrenkoComedy from the Friday Night Project’s Alan Carr, a return visit to the Phil from Liverpool favourites The Waterboys and a double bill of concerts from Ireland’s most popular ‘easy on the ear’ entertainer Daniel O’Donnell add to the variety of the season. Regular concerts from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with 30 year old Principal Conductor Vasily Petrenko and a host of international soloists and conductors also feature in what is surely one of Philharmonic Hall’s most eclectic programmes yet!
