FutureEverything – May 11-14 2011, Manchester.
All the events and activities come under three strands: art, music and the well-established conference.
Formerly known as Futuresonic, this is the essential place to find out what’s on the horizon in creative new technologies and digital culture. This year the creative hub of the festival will be the Umbro Design Studio in the Northern Quarter and Four Piccadilly Place, but with exhibits spilling out across the city.
Here’s just a few choices…
Art: On Ways to Disappear Without Leaving A Trace by Me and The Machine
Date: May 11-14
Time: 10am – 8pm
Location: Four Piccadilly Place
Cost: Free but booking essential
We recommend this intriguing-sounding interactive film/art performance for one person at a time, created by Brighton-based art duo Me and The Machine. Located on the fifth floor of Four Piccadilly Place, this involves looking through a telescope whereby a cinematic plot unfolds before your eyes. Make sure you book in advance.

Film: Life in a Day
Date: May 14
Time: 6pm
Location: Cornerhouse
Cost: £7.50 / £5.50 concs
On July 24 2010, 81,000 people from 192 countries uploaded video of their lives to YouTube. This experimental idea, sourcing user-generated content, resulted in this feature film by Last King of Scotland director Kevin MacDonald, and shows an emotive snapshot of life on earth.
Handmade
Date: Saturday, May 14
Time: 10am-4pm
Cost: Free, but booking required through website
Location: Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road
Held at Victoria Baths, Handmade is a day of contemporary craft, digital hacking, interactivities and DIY culture. The fair, hosted by Manchester’s Fab Lab, will allow members of the public to play and experiment with digital manufacturing equipment to create something they can take away with them.
