FutureEverything, Manchester’s award winning innovation lab for digital culture, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, having spent the last 20 years exploring the meeting point of technology, society and culture which lies at the heart of the digital debate.
Founded in 1995, the city-wide FutureEverything festival brings people together to discover, experience and share new ideas for the future though art, music and discussion. Recent themes covered include Tools for Unknown Futures, Smart Citizens and the Digital Public Space.
The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) will be the Hub for the art, live and film programmes, as the two organisations continue a long-term artistic partnership with a co-curated programme of installations, performances and new commissions.
The FutureEverything Conference returns to the neo-gothic splendour of Manchester Town Hall on the 26 and 27 February, for inspiring talks from internationally renowned speakers, plus hands-on workshops, keynotes and other sessions.
The festival will also take over ‘The Shed’ throughout February as it becomes the Festival Lab. With support from MMU Digital Innovation, the Festival Lab will develop a number of new FutureEverything commissions, host prototyping events, design challenges, and international innovation labs. All of the projects developed at the Festival Lab will be showcased, tested and performed during the conference and performance programmes.
In its 20th year, FutureEverything asks “what now?” for our digital culture. Do we need a bigger vision than open, local, bottom up is best? What are the values and narratives that will define the twenty years to come?
Over the past 20 years, the critical futurism of the Festival has been surrounded by an organisation that applies this insight in science, in cities, as well as in art. For its 20th anniversary, FutureEverything is not staging a retrospective, but a platform for a global community to collaboratively reflect on the bleeding edges of art, academia, design and business.
