Squaremile at the Bridewell

Another excellent thoughtful exhibition at the Bridewell has just opened and continues until 28 November 2010.

The previous exhibition ‘Investigation‘ was great too but I hadn’t been able to review it before it finished.

This exhibition ‘Squaremile’ features work from artists from outside the Bridewell who have been invited to engage with and respond to the square mile area around the Bridewell.

The first work you see as you enter is Carol Ramsay’s ‘St Bride’s Well’ which represents the Everton Tower where 18th century local ‘wrong do-ers’ were incarcerated as, of course, this Bridewell was in more recent times. Do take a look inside too.

On the wall in the corridor is a piece by Fiona Filby who photographed the area and recorded the reactions, quite often negative, from the authorities and public.

Claire Freeman also presents a photography piece but using a rather unusual camera – a pinhole suitcase.

You’ll find Anthony O’Connell’s work ‘A Rock and a Hard Place’ is nicely presented (despite being in the Gents!). Open the hospital clipboards to see the images which include gold leaf and references the proximity of the church to the hospital, they may be physically close but in some ways the gap is widening.

David Jacques ‘Allotment’ is a series of beautiful pen and ink botanical studies which came out of working with the Family Refugee Support Project who spend time on a nearby allotment.

There are many other pieces too by Sean Hawkridge, Cathy Butterworth, Julie Dodd, Margaretha Schoning, Lucy Harvey, Andrew Coady and Cath McGrail and don’t miss Anna Ketskemety’s ‘Doppelganger’ as you go up stairs.
