New work by artist Geoff Parr is currently exhibited at Novas Contemporary Urban Centre until 22nd August.

Geoff P 04.jpg 8These highly unusual pieces give the impression of a fabric base, yet on close inspection are constructed from a wide and sometimes seemingly incompatible range of materials, constructed of stuffing, hand stitching and canvas painted using household paints, oils and acrylics. ‘Time Out’  has called his work ‘Post-Punk Pop’.

The title of the exhibition arises from the contrast between the initial image projected by the work, and the actuality of its construction. Geoff describes himself as ‘part sculptor, part painter, part fashion-designer,’.

Geoff has been working on this collection of paintings for the last three years, and wanted to exhibit them in his home town of Liverpool, showing the development of his ideas over a period of time.

For instance, one of his favourite pieces at the moment is ‘Morecambe Bay’. Geoff says: “I thought about Morecambe as it would have appeared at different times of the day, and about the architecture and clothing which around the time of its heyday.”

His work is created through a series of destructive acts, e.g. cutting, pouring and stitching paintings.
