Almost literally bumped into Ken Dodd in Lime Street station yesterday on our way to Manchester. These bronze statues of him and Bessie Braddock are by Liverpool sculptor Tom Murphy, the work is called ‘Chance Meeting’.
I like the fact that they are at ground level, not up on a plinth or fenced off so it easy for the public to interact with them, several people were taking pictures of each other standing alongside them.
I’m sure everyone knows the comedian Ken Dodd but ‘Battling Bessie’ is less familiar, Mrs Braddock, who died in 1970, was MP for the old Liverpool Exchange seat for 25 years and a socialist campaigner. Here, she is carrying an egg because apparently she was responsible for having the little lion stamped on British eggs – do they still do that? I haven’t eaten an egg for many years.
