DaDaFest 09 launched at the Contemporary Urban Centre on Tuesday. Its the 9th festival and has become such an established part of the Liverpool arts calendar its hard to imagine the year without it but Liverpool is actually one of only very few places to hold a festival of Disability and Deaf arts. Great credit to Ruth Gould and the rest of the DaDa team as well as Liverpool City Council, Arts Council NW and other funders for their continued support.
The festival runs until 5 December 2009 with lots of events at various venues but after the launch at CUC we viewed the new work by Liz Crow in the ground floor gallery. ‘Resistance: Which way the Future‘ is a powerful and moving series of videos starting with a dramatisation based on Aktion-T4, the Nazi mass-murder programme that led to the death of quarter of a million disabled people. We then move onto another screen for a video of some of the actors who took part talking about the issues and how it felt to take part.
This is a touring exhibition which will soon be going to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.
