‘Body Lanscapes’ by Stephanie de Leng
at the Gallery Liverpool
30 October – 19 November 2009

“Body Landscapes’ is a reaction against the plethora of air brushed images foisted upon us by the media at every turn. Whether it be the glossies, TV or film, we have grown accustomed to a world where not a hair is out of place, nor a blemish to be seen; skin is always smooth and radiant, and of course, muscles toned and sleek.” – Stephanie de Leng
This is a new gallery in Stanhope Street and very nice it is too. The proprietors have done an excellent job of turning the large room formerly the workshop of sail-makers into a bright, modern exhibition space.
The inaugural exhibition is very good too, some may say controversial, the opening was preceded by a debate at Liverpool University which you can watch online.
The images are all close-up photographs of parts of people’s bodies which, as we all know, are not really all that beautful. In fact some of the pictures are not easy to look at but are nevertheless excellent photographs.
I like the way they have been printed onto clear unframed perspex too.
Full marks to Stephanie for highlighting this serious subject in such an artistic way.
