Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2010

I always enjoy the New Contemporaries exhibitions at the A Foundation during Liverpool Biennial. This one gets off to a good start as one enters through a ridiculously oversized door. We then see a version of Narcissus  sitting on a mirror and a bird looks at its reflection on black paper  – the image is painted rather than reflected, cleverly done.

As usual there is a lot of experimenting with new ideas or re-visiting old ideas, young artists striving to be different – to establish their own identity. There’s plenty of humour and playfulness as well as tackling some serious issues.

Featuring the work of 49 artists across a range of media, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to engage with new practice and ideas from across the UK. Participants are selected by a panel comprised of influential arts figures, predominantly artists, the selectors for 2010 are Gabriel Kuri, Mark Leckey and Dawn Mellor.
