Terry Hands – Performance 06 Lecture

Theatre director to share experiences of life in the spotlight

The founder of the Liverpool Everyman, Terry Hands is to share his experiences of the theatre at a public lecture at the University of Liverpool.

Terry Hands is the second guest speaker in the university’s Performance 06 lecture series, which was launched by Liverpool football legend, Alan Hansen, last month in recognition of the city’s sporting heritage.

Establishing the Liverpool Everyman in 1964, Terry Hands went on to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, becoming joint Artistic Director in 1978 and Chief Executive in 1986. He later took over Theatre Clwyd (now Clwyd Theatr Cymru) to prevent its closure, which went on to win numerous awards and accolades.

Terry will visit the University to share his experiences of the theatre in celebration of the city’s top actors and actresses in Liverpool’s ‘Year of Performance.’

Terry said: “I have fond memories of Liverpool, particularly during the early days of the Everyman Theatre when we met with exciting new writers, directors and so many daring young actors and actresses. The theatre was a catalyst for visionary thinkers and performers and the Everyman became known for its meaningful dramas and ambitious ideas.

“So many talented performers began their careers at the Everyman, such as Sir Anthony Sher, Julie Walters, Bill Nighy, David Morrissey and Willy Russell. I am proud to have worked with so many of them and look forward to sharing my experiences with a Liverpool audience in the city’s Year of Performance.”

Terry Hands’ public lecture will take place on Monday 22 May at 6.30pm in the university’s Sherrington Building, Ashton Street.
