Mhairi Corr – ‘Archetypes’ at Brindley

On Saturday 4th November a brand new exhibition opened at The Brindley Arts Centre in Runcorn. The exhibition is called ‘Archetypes’ and is a series of characters created by Glasgow based artist Mhairi Corr. All the work is brand new and has never been seen before.

Characters within the exhibition include ‘Single Minded Bridget’, who masters great feats of daring, dressed in a large purple swimming costume and flip-flops. Bridget is joined by Olaf Witt, the jester whose role in life is to make fun of people, and Helena Handcart, a wise woman who can banish demons and cure ailing goats.

Mhairi Corr has a very vivid imagination. Her figures start life as a wire frame. Slowly and carefully Mhairi builds up layers of pulped paper onto the frame. Each layer is left to dry before applying the next and eventually a person or animal appears.

Mhairi developed this way of working out of necessity. At first she worked in wood but this proved to be too difficult for someone living and working in an attic flat. All the banging and hammering was annoying her neighbours and so she developed a way of producing her work using newspaper pulp – a much quieter material!

This is a touring exhibition, which will be on display at The Brindley between 4 November and 2nd December.

The Brindley gallery is open Monday to Friday 10.00 – 17.00, Saturday, 10.00 – 15.00 and admission is free.
