JMU – Fine Art Degree Show

jmudeg10.jpgjmudeg1.jpg

Look out for the menacing giant Gingerbread man if you visit the John Moores Degree show. Its part of a fascinating Hansel and Grettel installation by Suzanne Ashall. In the same room is Kenneth Ashton whose photographs and toothpick works are also rather good.

As it was a hot sunny day when I visited, Linda Pittwood’s beach, complete with deck chairs and towels was appropriate. This shared one of the huts with Gemma Harris’s room completely covered in envelopes with the contents carefully piled up outside and Dave Barry’s all white reconstructions of a bed and bath.

Other highlights for me included paintings by Samuel Savage, Michael Costigan, Elizabeth Hodgkinson and Barbara Watterson; Peter Duffy’s videos projected onto metal sheets and Peter Pmblett’s sculptures.

Overall, I wasn’t as excited by this years show. Maybe because there’s only about 45 students, less dynamism or spark. Still lots of good stuff though and more fun than the average gallery visit so try and see it before it ends on Thursday June 8th 2006 at 2a Myrtle St.
