5A TheGallery to Close Soon

This is a great shame, 5A in St Helens have had some very good exhibitions and there’s precious few such places in the area. I will miss my occasional train rides out there, though The Citadel and Glass Museum may still provide something of interest.
It seems the local council spent a few million setting up the ‘George Street Cultural Quarter’ then failed to give it the necessary support, indeed they now charge unrealistic high rates. Sounds familiar.

From Jess Bowstead…
after 21 exhibitions and 3 years of hard work, 5athegallery must close this December. No longer will there exist in St Helens a unique and vital contemporary platform for supporting local, regional and national artists through the exhibiting of their visual art work.

If you are disappointed or disheartened by this news then please let myself or Ken Hughes know, or, perhaps, you may personally feel moved to write to a local newspaper or Councillor … after all, the multi award winning ‘George Street Cultural Quarter’ will very shortly be totally void of any culture or cultural promise for the future.

Maybe you think that St Helens hasn’t ever needed or wanted a contemporary art gallery, or that it will never need one … your honest opinions are welcome, because, after investing a great deal of time and effort in creating, and trying to establish, the towns first contemporary art and craft gallery, we feel that it would be very useful to have some ‘real’ feedback from our friends, visitors and customers.

Kind Regards
Jess Bowstead
