Liverpool Design Symposium, St Georges Hall 23 Oct 08

Liverpool Design Symposium – A major industry event

The inaugural Liverpool Design Symposium is a major event involving collaboration between leading national industry bodies, D&AD and DBA alongside the city’s creative industry agencies, Design Initiative and Merseyside ACME.

Taking place on 23 October 2008 at the prestigious St. George’s Hall, the Symposium is the brainchild of three of Liverpool’s top design agencies, Uniform, Smiling Wolf and Black & Ginger, who were inspired to organise an event to focus attention on the creative design sector during the Capital of Culture year.

Presenting an insightful and inspirational programme involving some of the design industry’s leading figures, the event aims to attract creative practitioners and students alike from across the country.

Aspiring creatives and students of advertising and design will have the opportunity to hear top tips on how to break into the industry in a Student Awards talk by D&AD, featuring freelance digital guru Susie Webb and Elmwood’s Richard Scholey. D&AD will also be screening a selection of winning work from this year’s Awards, followed by a Q&A session on all you ever wanted to know about D&AD juries, the judging process and how to win an elusive Yellow Pencil.

The DBA will be running a Business Briefing on ‘Surviving the Credit Crunch’. There will also be a talk by leading international typographer Bruno Maag, founder of Dalton Maag, and an exhibition of winners of this year’s Roses Design Awards.

The day culminates with D&AD’s President’s Lecture featuring Matt Pyke, founder of Universal
Everything; an innovative cross-disciplinary team of designers, programmers, animators and musicians.

Matt Pyke will be talking about his work which includes projects for Apple, Nike, London 2012 Olympics, Channel 4 and his current commission to create sound sculptures for the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Kevin McManus of Merseyside ACME said, “Bringing D&AD and DBA to Liverpool for the first time shows how significant the local design sector’s profile is becoming nationally. We have been proud to part fund the Design Symposium activity and the fact local design professionals have driven this important initiative themselves demonstrates the strength of the design sector in Liverpool.”

Sarah Elderkin of Liverpool based Design Initiative said, “The unique way that the business community and industry bodies are collaborating on plans for the event shows the enthusiasm we all have for encouraging the creative community in the city.”
