‘Contagion’ at School of Tropical Medicine

Malaria, Cholera, Typhoid, A.I.D.S., T.B.. Not the most happy of subjects for artwork but Barbara Jones finds her inspiration in electron microscope images of various bacteria and viruses. Her work is a mixture of painting on canvas and modified medical protection clothing such as masks and gloves.

The patterns are quite beautiful but knowing that they are actually diseases is bound to affect ones perception which is something that interests the artist. She says “It would seem that fear of disease is man’s latest neurosis, perhaps as a result of its subversive and mysterious nature. My work invites an inquiring response from the audience, communicating ideas of beauty versus disgust, the visible versus the invisible and protection versus contamination”

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is world famous for its research into such diseases so it is appropriate that this exhibition is here in their common room.
‘Contagion’ by Barbara Jones is open Monday to Friday 12.00 – 14.00 until November 24th 2006
