PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION ‘WOMEN OF IRON’ CONTINUES THE MADE OF IRON THEME OF EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY.
This project, commissioned during the Wirral’s Borough of Cultureprogramme, has captured the female workforce in Cammell Laird Shipyard during the summer of 2019.
The resulting photographs are a current interpretation of Tom Wood’simages (recently shown at the Williamson in 2018) which documented male workers when the shipyard was in decline taken during 1993-96. Young female photographers from Wirral working with creative partners, VidA Creative were given unprecedented access to Cammell Laird during the construction of the RSS Sir David Attenborough and have created striking portraits of the women at work.
Gaining unprecedented access to the shipyard, and working closely with both Cammell Laird and British Antarctic Survey, the young women have learnt the techniques of using film cameras, working on site with unfamiliar surroundings and gained the trust of their subjects to produce portraits that portray the women at work.
Women of Iron will run from September 28th until November 24th and, like all of the Williamson’s exhibitions, is free. We are open Wednesday-Sunday 10am-5pm.
