Marine Lake Series by Derek King
The Marine Lake is a familiar feature of our landscape that we can take for granted. This series of paintings by Derek King examines our relationship with the Lake, asking questions around why we are drawn to it and trying to understand what we see or do not see.
To experience the Lake, a walk is a good place to start, as it has a beginning, a middle and an end, and you can see how far you have travelled. It is a place to think things through or just a way of blowing off the cobwebs. It is this individual experience of the lake that Derek’s paintings try to encapsulate
The paintings are often abstracted from sketches and photographs that have been taken over the past 12 months. All the works start as drawings that try to map the physical geography of the lake as well as assimilating Derek’s personal and emotional response to this landscape into his studies.
The paintings have both mapping and diagrammatic elements similar to Blueprints. This mirrors and acknowledges the structural imposition of the lake on the landscape. Line is used to express multiple perspectives, giving the paintings a fluidity and movement informed by the structure itself. The paintings are intended to be an intensely personal and poetic response to this landscape.
