ARTIST TALK: JACQUI MCASSEY ON GIRLFANS
Thursday 16 March / 6pm-7.30pm / Free / Booking Required
According to a recent survey, a quarter of Premier League match attenders (of the male game) are female. Founded by Jacqui McAssey, Girlfans is an ongoing photographic project and publication that aims to visually celebrate these female supporters by documenting who they are and how they express their fandom through fashion and clothing. Jacqui McAssey will be joining us to discuss her fantastic project.
Between 2013 and 2015 Jacqui, along with Photographer Alex Hurst took 150 photographs of women and girls at Anfield, Goodison and Wembley, a selection of which have been published and presented in a traditional printed football fanzine. Jacqui is photographing supporters of Manchester City FC at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the 2016/17 season.
Jacqui McAssey is a Senior Lecturer in Fashion Communication at Liverpool John Moores University and specialises in Fashion Styling and Promotion. She has recently become a member of The Football Collective. Alex Hurst is a photographer and also lectures at UCLan.
Girlfans Issue 1: LFC & Issue 2: EFC are both available for £5 each from our independent gallery shop. Follow the project on Instagram and Facebook @Girlfanszine.
This event is free, however booking is required. Reserve your place at Open Eye Gallery; call +44 (0)151 236 6768 or email info@openeye.org.uk
