Liverpool Collective Between the Borders work to improve the experiences of new migrants and asylum seekers through shared creative expression and platforms of experience.

Join them for a workshop on collaborative production and collage making with the opportunity to print a zine on the day from images made!

THE VICTORIAN PHOTOGRAPHER: WET PLATE PORTRAIT SITTINGS

Have your photograph taken by John Brewer, The Victorian Photographer. Portrait sessions are informal, fun and interactive!

A picture with your friends and family or an individual portrait, this is a fantastic opportunity to own an image created using techniques discovered by the Victorians.

There will also be a dressing-up box filled with fancy dress clothes, unusual props and Victorian costume for you to accessorise with!

Watch John prepare a photographic plate and load the camera before you sit for your portrait. Once your photograph has been taken you can watch as the images is developed before your eyes!

Because of the nature of the process each image is unique and non reproducible, it is a one of a kind. Your portrait will be taken on blackened metal using period equipment. This process, called a tintype, takes approximately 20 minutes.

A great photographic object, an alternative family portrait and a unique Christmas gift!

ILFORD PHOTO: THE HISTORY OF PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHY

David Abberley, product technonogist at Harman Technology (Ilford Photo), will talk about the history of pinhole photography ahead of his pinhole photography workshop.

A pinhole camera, also known as camera obscura, or “dark chamber”, is a simple optical imaging device in the shape of a closed box or chamber. In one of its sides is a small hole which creates an image of the outside space on the opposite side of the box.

Build your own robust, re-usable pinhole camera and develop and print your own paper negatives in a traditional wet darkroom!

All materials you need to build your camera and develop your own prints will be provided. Participants will also have the chance to experiment with Ilford’s Obscura pinhole camera.

Emulsion lifts are a great way to get creative with analogue instant photography. Learn how to peel the layer of photographic emulsion off a Polaroid picture and transfer your image to a different surface create a different artwork!

Each participant will have access to a Polaroid camera and film from The Impossible Project.

All materials will be provided, feel free to bring your own Polaroid camera and Polaroid images along too.
