Evening wear from the 1920s to the 1980s
This glamorous exhibition shines a spotlight on the lasting appeal of beaded and sequinned dresses and their place in fashion history.
Featuring a range of garments from the 1920s to the 1980s, the exhibition highlights the evolution of style, craftsmanship, and the cultural significance of evening wear over the past century.
Early 20th century dresses reflect the longing for opulence and glamour after the First World War, while later pieces show how fashion responded to cultural shifts and technological advancements in textile production. Visitors will also learn about the specialist craftsmanship behind these garments, with a focus on the hand-beading technique known as tambouring.
The display includes 14 items from the 1920s and 1930s, previously showcased at Walker Art Gallery, alongside an additional selection of eight garments from the 1980s to today. The combination of historical and modern visuals offers an in-depth look at the artistic and cultural narratives that have influenced women’s fashion, providing a vivid and captivating experience for all visitors.
