Knowsley Urban Sketchers
Six sessions: December 2021, January & February 2022

Kirkby Gallery and Friends of Kirkby Gallery & Prescot Museum community group are running a new series of six urban sketching sessions in Knowsley, in partnership with the Liverpool Independent Art School (LIAS)

All sessions are free to attend and will be delivered by professional artists Paul Gatenby and Tony O’Connell of LIAS, with each session taking place in different locations across the borough.

All of the Knowsley Urban Sketchers sessions will run 10am – 3pm and will include a short talk at the beginning, where possible, on the cultural history of the site. The day will be in two sections: drawing on-location in the morning and then breaking for lunch; coming together for the ‘throwdown’ and group critique/discussion in the afternoon.

Dates of sessions:

Wednesday 8 December 2021
Saturday 11 December 2021
Friday 17 December 2021
Saturday 15 January 2022
Thursday 20 January 2022
Friday 11 February 2022

The locations will include: the Reservists Barracks in Huyton, Kirkby Market, Knowsley Safari Park, Prescot town centre, and a special exclusive session at St Chad’s Church in Kirkby beneath Gaia, Luke Gerram’s stunning sculpture of the Earth, part of Knowsley’s Borough of Culture 2022 programme.

As 2022 is Knowsley’s Borough of Culture year, our hope for the Knowsley Urban Sketchers project will be the creation of a new and local group of sketchers who will be able to document the many events and arts projects taking place during exciting year, the results of which we hope to be showcased in an exhibition at Kirkby Gallery in 2023.

Most sessions will be broken down into the following structure:

•    10am: Meet on site (this will change dependent on session) and be greeted by Paul and Tony (known as “Toc”) of Liverpool Independent Art School
•    10.15am: Introduction to session and discussion on key objectives/drawing exercises of the session
•    10.30 – 11am: Tour of site where applicable (host venue)
•    11am – 1pm: Sketching in situ
•    1pm: Break for lunch
•    1.45pm: Throwdown and group crit
•    3pm: End of session

Participants must bring their own drawing materials, lunch, drinks, and wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the location and weather.

If you would like to attend the Knowsley Urban Sketchers sessions, please email galleries@knowsley.gov.uk with your details so that we can add you to the register and contact you nearer the time with more information.
