A PEDAL-POWERED, OFF-GRID MUSIC CARNIVAL
WAX + GEARS RETURNS! Our pedal-powered, off-grid Music Carnival is back for 2023…
WAX + GEARS, a one-day festival of emerging music, sustainable practice and climate activism, takes place in an off-grid, pedal-powered arena within our large outdoor garden space at Future Yard. Drawing together the ideas of music discovery, vinyl culture, cycling, DIY, analogue and with an eco-conscious aesthetic, Wax + Gears will be a platform based around community, collective enrichment and celebration.
The event will be completely off-grid, with all power generated by a bank of dynamo bikes adjacent to the stage. The audience will be encouraged to ‘keep the pedals turning so the records keep on spinning!’ throughout the day.
Live music from a diverse range of Merseyside artists, including FY favourite Beija Flo, Cheery + Tessio.
This is a free event. No tickets required.
WAX + GEARS is an opportunity for us to open our doors to the local community and welcome our neighbours to Future Yard. The event is completely free, and we’re encouraging everyone to come along and help us celebrate our commitment to sustainability.
The event is hosted as part of our Sustainability Roadmap, launched in March 2022 and produced in partnership with LJMU’s Low Carbon Eco Innovatory. At the heart of the plan is a move to encouraging our audiences to move away from cars and towards active travel through dynamic and creative conversations.

FAMILY FUN RIDE @ WAX + GEARS
Organised with HYPE Urban Bikes, we’re organising a family bike ride around Birkenhead Park and over to Future Yard just in time for the start of the festival.
You can sign-up to the ride here and select if you’d like to loan a bike for the event. All riders are encouraged to wear a helmet. We’ll be meeting up at the South Lodge Grand Entrance to the park at 1pm.
If you’re bringing your own bike you’ll also have the chance to put it through a quick health check with the mechanics at HYPE, so it’s prepped and ready for anything!
UPCYCLING CRAFT WORKSHOP
Comics Youth show us the best way to re-use and upcycle your old gig posters, flyers, and more!
SUSTAINABLE MERCH CLOTHES SWAP
Run by FY’s own Again, we’ll be hosting a sustainable clothes swap and encouraging artists to chat with us about how to make green decisions when it comes to merchandise.
