Dimensions Variable, by Casey Lauren
Moving beyond the framed surface and the bounded physicality of painting, “Dimensions Variable” challenges traditional curatorial approaches to painting, with a series of ten paintings which reject pictorial illusion, in order to present a paintings’ physical attributes (the underlying structure and stretched surface) as the subject instead.
With each featured painting’s ability to be displayed in a variety of ways, it allows them to question and directly respond to the space in which they are displayed to propose painting as something immersive as opposed to static.
Whether hung, propped, suspended or left entirely free standing – these paintings are kept in a constant state of flux between a sculptural object and painterly prop, effectively blurring the distinction between painting and sculpture.
