Princess, Angel……Bitch, Whore is the latest installation by Lidia Lidia, a multi-disciplinary artist who works with installation, video, photography, performance and activism.

In this installation a Barbie Doll surrounded by pink flowers seduces us into the gentle prettiness of popular female imagery that starts in childhood and extends into adulthood. This Barbie, however, has multiple arms, each occupied with domestic chores, and a heavily bruised face. Arrestingly disturbing, this picture comes out of Lidia Lidia’s extensive research and, as with much of her work, uses superficially beautiful images to communicate uncomfortable narratives rooted in social injustice and inequality.

Princess…Whore deals with misogynistic cultural stereotypes which influence female lives. Worldwide, they trap many women and girls in positions of submission to the males of their family and community, both as domestic labour and sexualised objects. This frequently feeds into casual and persistent violence, which can be extreme. A recent United Nations study* stated that in 2017, worldwide 50,000 women and girls were killed by intimate partners or family members, meaning that 137 women were killed by a member of their own family every day.

Lidia Lidia believes passionately that ‘the personal is political’ and that through art it is possible to shape a fair and equal society.

*United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) published a ‘Global Study on Homicide’ which includes a publication dedicated to the ‘gender-related killing of women and girls’
